This Colonial Era government building was built in 1771, but the basement had been converted into a Revolutionary War dungeon by British armies. American prisoners, slaves, and every day citizens were forced into excruciatingly brutal circumstances by the soldiers.

While you may admire the architecture, there’s no doubt a somber air as you tour the building, which some say is haunted by the past prisoners.

USS Yorktown Ghost Tour

If you head to the coast of Charleston and look east, you’ll see a massive WWII era aircraft carrier floating in the bay. Believe it or not, you can hop on deck for a guided tour of the facility, learn about the lives of the crew members, and discover disturbing stories about them.

While it is considered a ghost tour, there are some positive stories of heroism and honor thrown in the mix, helping dull the edge that so many of these ghost stories have.

The old jail looks daunting from the outside, with chipped paint, dirty concrete, and an ominous feel as you approach its doors. Thrill-seeking guests love touring the old jail to learn about some of the criminals who were kept here. The tour guides steal the show here, as they can answer questions, dress up for Halloween, and are overall fun hosts.

We can’t talk about horror tours without bringing up the cemetery! Located on the edge of the city, the Magnolia Cemetery has everything you’d expect from an old southern graveyard. This 90-minute walking tour will delve into dramatic points of history that may cause the spirits here to linger on…don’t get too jumpy!

For a chiller experience, you should try this tour! There are three ghostly tours every night, so you have a lot more flexibility than some of these other locations. These walking tours take you to different historical locations within Charleston with well-researched, historical tales to share. If you’re not into spookums, but still want to experience some of the horror elements of the city, you may prefer one of the riding carriage tours instead. You won’t go inside any of the locations, but you’ll get to hear some of the creepy stories and get a feel for the ominous history surrounding the downtown area.
